Rome-based Matteo Armelini, 32, died and two other workmen suffered minor injuries while they were erecting one of the stage structures for a Laura Pausini concert at the Palacalafiore sports centre in Reggio Calabria.
Little more is known about the collapse at this time. The stage was apparently one of three used on a large, 15-truck tour and according to Italian reports, the structure “slipped” while workers were installing lighting. It collapsed into an area of seating where it crushed Armelini who was reportedly killed instantly. Two other workers were reportedly injured but nothing else is known about their contidion at this time.
The photo below is of a show in 2009 and is NOT of the stage that collapsed. Included only to show that this was a show by a major Italian artist that many reading this may not be familiar with.

Little more is known at this time. Like the collapse in Trieste in on Dec 13, 2011, the show was in a “sporting complex.” Reggio Calabria is an ancient city of 188K people located on the “toe” of the “Italian boot”, separated by a narrow straits from the Island of Sicily. The town is a popular tourist destination and is probably best known for a massive earthquake in 1908 that killed a quarter of the population and for a high-profile government corruption scandle in the 1990s.
